And when Team NICOTAWINES arrived at Montebello Park in St. Catharines, it was immediately clear that this was something altogether different from any wine experience we had encountered before.

Pavilions, tasting stations, and vendor stalls stretched across the grounds, with the hum of live music weaving through every conversation. Locals, visitors, industry professionals, and curious first-timers all converged in one place, united by a shared appreciation for what the Niagara Peninsula does best: grow exceptional wine.

The energy was impossible to ignore. This was not a stiff, formal tasting event with hushed rooms and rigid protocols. It was a celebration -- warm, generous, and full of the kind of spontaneous discovery that reminds you why wine matters beyond the bottle.

For a team dedicated to curating the finest wines for the Nigerian market, the opportunity to explore over 100 Niagara VQA wines in a single setting was nothing short of extraordinary. VQA -- Vintners Quality Alliance -- is Canada's appellation system, guaranteeing that wines are grown and produced entirely within defined Ontario wine regions. In short, every glass we tasted at the festival was a direct expression of Niagara terroir.

We tasted our way through crisp Rieslings that carried the mineral precision of the Niagara Escarpment, lush Chardonnays with a richness that surprised even seasoned palates, elegant Pinot Noirs that spoke quietly but with real depth, and sparkling wines that rivalled anything we have encountered in the classic regions of Europe. And then, of course, there was the Icewine -- Canada's most celebrated gift to the wine world -- concentrated, luminous, and unlike anything else on earth.

A festival of this calibre does not let the wine carry the evening alone. The local cuisine on offer was as thoughtfully curated as the wine selection -- fresh, regional, and designed to complement rather than compete. It requires good ingredients and the freedom to explore.
